The present study assessed the effect of adding water and phytase to middling diets on digestibility, metabolism, performance, carcass characteristics, and the bone mineralization of growing and finishing pigs. For the digestibility trial, 16 pigs were distributed in randomized blocks, placed in digestibility cages following a 2 x 2 factorial design (dry and wet diets, with and without phytase). For the performance trial, 48 piglets were distributed into a complete randomized design. During the growing period, wet diets presented higher values for digestibility and energy metabolism. In the finishing stage, the addition of water to the feed caused a greater weight gain and interfered with the carcass length. The balance of the mineral matter and the...

Sousa,RF; Dourado,LRB; Lopes,JB; Fernandes,ML; Kato,RK; Nascimento,DCN; Sakomura,NK; Lima,SBP; Ferreira,GJBC.
ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to evaluate the performance, carcass yield, and histomorphometry of the small intestine of broilers fed yeast sugarcane supplemented with enzymatic blend from 22 to 42 days of age. Seven hundred broiler chicks were distributed in a completely randomized design in a factorial design (2x3+1), two levels of the enzyme blend (0 and 200 g/ton), three protein levels (0%, 6% and 12%) and a control diet. The level of 6% yeast showed higher feed intake and weight gain after 33 days. From 22 to 42 days there was no significant effect (p<0.05) to the use of yeast in animal performance, carcass yield and cuts. At 42 days an interaction between the factors for width and crypt depth in the duodenum and jejunum, respectively,...

Effect of an Enzyme Blend on the Performance, Diet Metabolizability, Phosphorous Retention, and Bone Mineralization of Broilers Fed Diets Containing Defatted Rice Bran Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Moraes,ML; Ledur,VS; Kessler,AM; Machado,PHM; Della,MP; Ribeiro,AML.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of an enzyme blend (EB) on the performance, diet metabolizability, phosphorus (P) retention, and bone mineralization of broilers fed diets containing 10% defatted rice bran (DRB). In total, 432 one- to 38-d-old male Cobb broilers were evaluated according to a completely randomized experimental design in 3 x 2 factorial arrangement. Three diets were tested with two nutrient reductions (NR) in the matrix (standard diet; NR I of 75 kcal/kg ME, 0.1% Ca and 0.1% available P; and NR II of 100 kcal/kg ME, 0.1% Ca and 0.1% available P) with or without the addition of an EB (200 g/t). The coefficients of total tract apparent retention (CTTAR) of the diets and P retention were determined by collecting excreta during...

Effect of an herbivorous diet on energy balance of Litopenaeus vannamei at selected ontogenetic stages ArchiMer
Maldonado, Carlos; Cuzon, Gerard; Guzman, Emilio; Brito, Roberto; Soto, Luis; Arena, Leticia; Gaxiola, Gabriela.
Herbivorous (20% vegetable protein, 40% carbohydrate) and carnivorous diets (40% marine animal protein, 20% carbohydrate) were experimentally tested to assess their effect on the energy balance and energetic substrates utilized by postlarvae (PL's /15 days) and juvenile shrimp (3-6 g) of Litopenaeus vannamei. Postlarval stage 60 (PL60, early juveniles) shrimps fed HeD and CaD diets, then late juveniles (3-6 g) acclimated to the same diets were tested for their respective energy partitioning potential. No significant differences (p>0.05) on growth were obtained in early juveniles (mean final wet weight of 0.19 g). However in late juvenile stages a significant difference (p<0.05) in growth rate was observed. In terms of energy partitioning, both early...

Effect of carbohydrate availability on time to exhaustion in exercise performed at two different intensities BJMBR
Lima-Silva,A.E.; De-Oliveira,F.R.; Nakamura,F.Y.; Gevaerd,M.S..
This study examined the effects of pre-exercise carbohydrate availability on the time to exhaustion for moderate and heavy exercise. Seven men participated in a randomized order in two diet and exercise regimens each lasting 3 days with a 1-week interval for washout. The tests were performed at 50% of the difference between the first (LT1) and second (LT2) lactate breakpoint for moderate exercise (below LT2) and at 25% of the difference between the maximal load and LT2 for heavy exercise (above LT2) until exhaustion. Forty-eight hours before each experimental session, subjects performed a 90-min cycling exercise followed by 5-min rest periods and a subsequent 1-min cycling bout at 125% VO2max/1-min rest periods until exhaustion to deplete muscle glycogen....

Effect of pectin extracted from citrus pulp on digesta characteristics and nutrient digestibility in broilers chickens R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva,Vanessa Karla; Morita,Viviane de Souza; Boleli,Isabel Cristina.
The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of continuous ingestion of pectin on intestinal viscosity, intestinal transit time, excreta moisture content, nutrient digestibility and energy metabolism of broilers at starter and growth phases. We used 240 one-day-old Cobb male broiler chicks, distributed in a completely randomized experimental design. Treatments consisted of four concentrations of pectin (0, 10, 30 and 50 g kg-1) with six replicates of 10 birds each. The ingestion of pectin supplied in the feed by broilers at the starter phase increased intestinal viscosity and intestinal transit time, reduced excreta moisture, improved the use of apparent metabolizable energy, nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy, coefficient of...

Effect of salinity on survival, growth and biochemical parameters in juvenile Lebranch mullet Mugil liza (Perciformes: Mugilidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Lisboa,Viviana; Barcarolli,Indianara Fernanda; Sampaio,Luís André; Bianchini,Adalto.
Teleost fish growth may be improved under isosmotic condition. Growth and metabolic performance of juvenile Mugil liza (isosmotic point: 12‰) were evaluated after 40 days in different salinities (0, 6, 12 and 24‰). Tests were performed in quadruplicate (30 fish/tank; 0.48 ± 0.1 g body weight; 3.27 ± 0.1 cm total length) under controlled water temperature (28.2 ± 0.1ºC) and oxygen content (>90% saturation). Fish were fed on artificial diet (50% crude protein) four times a day until apparent satiation. Results showed that salinity influenced juvenile mullet growth. Fish reared at salinity 24‰ grew better than those maintained in freshwater (salinity 0‰). Gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity and whole body oxygen consumption showed an U-shape-type response over the...

Effects of environmental conditions on the sessile existence of an estuarine sediment bacterium. ArchiMer
Geesey, G; Salas, S; Mittelman, M.
A submerged glass coverslip technique was developed to determine dissolved organic nutrient uptake by adherent cells of a sediment isolate of Enterobacter cloacae . Cells which colonized the coverslips in swirling culture flasks during anaerobic growth remained firmly attached during manipulations employed to determine uptake of radiolabeled glucose by the adherent population. The attached cells were capable of a more rapid rate of glucose uptake than free cells. Lineweaver-Burk plots demonstrated different glucose uptake kinetics for the 2 cell populations. The data suggest that physiological changes occur in cells soon after they become attached to surfaces. These changes appear to enhance the metabolic activity of the adherent population.

Effects of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons upon the metabolism of the common sole Solea solea ArchiMer
Davoodi, Fariba; Claireaux, Guy.
On December 12th, 1999, the oil tanker Erika sank off the southern coast of Brittany (France), releasing 20 000–30 000 tons of heavy oil in the open sea. Among the affected coastal habitats were important nurseries for numerous flatfish species and particularly for the common sole, Solea solea. To investigate the potential impact of the spill on this economically significant resource, we employed Fry's concept of metabolic scope for activity to assess the deleterious effect of fuel exposure on the functional integrity of juvenile sole. Fish were captured from uncontaminated areas and experimentally exposed to contamination conditions mimicking those encountered during the weeks that followed the Erika spill. Using respirometry techniques we measured basal...

Effects of Heating on Proportions of Azaspiracids 1–10 in Mussels ( Mytilus edulis ) and Identification of Carboxylated Precursors for Azaspiracids 5, 10, 13, and 15 ArchiMer
Kilcoyne, Jane; Mccarron, Pearse; Hess, Philipp; Miles, Christopher O..
Azaspiracids (AZAs) are marine biotoxins that induce human illness following the consumption of contaminated shellfish. European Union regulation stipulates that only raw shellfish are tested, yet shellfish are often cooked prior to consumption. Analysis of raw and heat-treated mussels (Mytilus edulis) naturally contaminated with AZAs revealed significant differences (up to 4.6-fold) in AZA1–3 (1–3) and 6 (6) values due to heat-induced chemical conversions. Consistent with previous studies, high levels of 3 and 6 were detected in some samples that were otherwise below the limit of quantitation before heating. Relative to 1, in heat-treated mussels the average (n = 40) levels of 3 (range, 11–502%) and 6 (range, 3–170%) were 62 and 31%, respectively. AZA4...

Effects of insulin and actin on phosphofructokinase activity and cellular distribution in skeletal muscle Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Ana Paula P.; Alves,Gutemberg G.; Araújo,Alexandre H.B.; Sola-Penna,Mauro.
In this work, we report evidences that the association of phosphofructokinase and F-actin can be affected by insulin stimulation in rabbit skeletal muscle homogenates and that this association can be a mechanism of phos-phofructokinase regulation. Through co-sedimentation techniques, we observed that on insulin-stimulated tissues, approximately 70% of phosphofructokinase activity is co-located in an actin-enriched fraction, against 28% in control. This phenomenon is accompanied by a 100% increase in specific phosphofructokinase activity in stimulated homogenates. Purified F-actin causes an increase of 230% in phosphofructokinase activity and alters its kinetic parameters. The presence of F-actin increases the affinity of phosphofructokinase for fructose...

Effects of O-2 supersaturation on metabolism and growth in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) ArchiMer
Person, Jeannine; Pichavant, Karine; Vacher, Coralie; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Severe, Armelle; Boeuf, Gilles.
Effects of O-2 supersaturation on metabolism and growth were studied in juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). When fish were reared for 30 days in water containing O-2 at 147% or 223% air saturation, there were no significant differences in food intake, growth, food conversion or protein utilization compared to fish exposed to normoxia (100% air saturation in water outlet). Exposure to hyperoxia resulted in increased body fat deposition. Daily rates of O-2 consumption of resting fish were not affected by O-2-concentrations, and there were no significant differences in rates of nitrogenous excretion among fish exposed to the different O-2-concentrations. Turbot tolerated severe hyperoxia, 350% air saturation, for 10 days. There were changes in acid-base...

Turbot juveniles (45 g) were exposed for 41 d (17 C, 34parts per thousand salinity) to constant normoxic (100-100% air saturation, 100-100) or moderate hypoxic (75-75% air saturation, 75-75) conditions and to repeated hypoxic shocks (20% saturation for 1 h, 5 d per week) from normoxic (100-20% air saturation. 100-20) or moderate hypoxic (75-20% air saturation, 75-20) conditions. A normoxic group was feed restricted (100-FR). Mass increase of 100-100 and 75-75 groups fed to satiation was not significantly different. In comparison, it was significantly lower in the 100-20 and 75-20 groups (NS between the two hypoxic shocks groups). Intermediate results were obtained in the 100-100-FR group. The lowest mass increase under hypoxic shocks was explained by a...

Effects of water viscosity upon ventilation and metabolism of a flatfish, the common sole Solea solea (L.) ArchiMer
Couturier, Christine; Rouault, Alice; Mckenzie, David; Galois, Robert; Robert, Serge; Joassard, Lucette; Claireaux, Guy.
The French Atlantic coast contains large highly productive intertidal mudflats that are colonised by juveniles of numerous flatfish species, including the common sole (Solea solea, L.). These ecosystems are also heavily exploited by the shellfish farming industry. Intensive bivalve culture is associated with substantial biodeposition (1-6 t-dw ha(-1) day(-1)), which directly or indirectly contributes to increase exopolysaccharide (EPS) concentrations at the interface between water column and seabed. EPS are long-chain molecules organised into colloids, which influence rheological properties of water, particularly viscosity. Increased water viscosity had consequences for ventilatory activity of juvenile flatfish, whereby the minimal pressure required to...

Effets des caractéristiques physico-chimiques et biorhéologiques de l'eau sur la physiologie, les performances adaptatives et la sélection de l'habitat chez la sole commune Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) ArchiMer
Couturier, Christine.
Shellfish culture can lead to an accumulation of exopolysaccharides (EPS) over the surface of intertidal mudflats. EPS are rheologically active polymers that change water viscosity and water flow over the branchial basket of the juvenile flatfish that colonise intertidal mudflats. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of water EPS content on various aspects of the physiology and behaviour of the common sole Solea solea. Field studies revealed that water total EPS can be up to 15 mg l 1 in the field. In sole juveniles (aged class 0+) ventilatory distress was observed at concentrations above 4 mg l-1, and the intensity of the constraint decreased with fish size. Nonetheless, neither standard metabolic rate nor tolerance of hypoxia were influenced...

In the context of the fish farming industry needing to substitute the animal food (meal and oil) by vegetable ingredients, the main objective of this thesis was to study the long-term effects of a diet exclusively composed by plant products on the metabolism of the european sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and more particularly, on its capacity to biosynthesis the Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) from the PolyUnsaturated Fatty acids (PUFA) brought by this vegetal diet. Our transcriptomic approaches showed that the use of a plant food disrupted the lipids metabolism (cholesterol and fatty acids) and the energy metabolism (carbohydrates, amino acids) in the liver, but also affected other physiological processes such as the immune system. Energetic metabolism in fasting sheep: regularization of metabolic profile by treatment with oral glucose, with prior handling of gastric groove R. Bras. Zootec.
Martín-Alonso,María José; Escalera-Valente,Francisco; Cal-Pereyra,Luis G.; Benech,Alejandro; Alonso,María Pilar; González-Montaña,José Ramiro.
ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to evaluate a possible corrective measure against negative metabolic states, as occurs in the advanced stage of gestation in ewes, and that sometimes produces a disease called pregnancy toxaemia. In the present research, we found that the joint administration of i.v. lysine-vasopressin (0.08 IU/kg body weight, BW) and an oral glucose solution (50 g) produces an increase in blood glucose, which persists for some time (up to 6 h); therefore, it could be used in the treatment of pregnancy toxaemia. This therapy is based on the fact that lysine-vasopressin induces gastric groove closure in adult ruminants, enabling orally administered glucose to reach the abomasum directly, from where it rapidly passes into the...

Energy utilization of light and heavy weaned piglets subjected to different dietary energy levels R. Bras. Zootec.
Ribeiro,Andréa Machado Leal; Farina,Giovani; Vieira,Marcia de Souza; Perales,Valentino Arnaiz; Kessler,Alexandre de Mello.
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary metabolisable energy (ME: 3.25, 3.40, 3.55, or 3.70 Mcal kg−1) and weaning weight (WW: light 4.0±0.7 kg, and heavy: 6.3±0.6 kg) on productive response and energy utilization of weaned piglets. Sixty-four male piglets were housed in 32 metabolic cages (two animals per cage) during the first 14 d postweaning. At day 15, only one animal per cage was kept until day 28. Body composition, energy, and nutrient deposition rates and energy utilization efficiency were measured through a comparative slaughter procedure. Piglets with light WW had a poorer feed conversion ratio and lower weight gain and feed intake when expressed per live weight. Increased ME led to greater daily fat deposition in the...
